Well, one of my favorites for all forms of photography is National Geographic's The Ultimate Field Guide to Photography. It pretty much covers everything you can think of from the basics to more advanced photography, phone camera photography and more. It does have some examples that could be considered maybe a little adult for someone who is 12, but it's an outstanding resource for the budding photographer.

Another one that I think is a bit simpler and is kind of aimed more at the Lomo style crowd is Hot Shots by Kevin Meredith. It has film and DSLR imagery that is highly stylized along with info as to why each shot works, basic settings information, and does a pretty nice job of making you as a photographer "get it" as far as the basics of composition, color, the works really.

It's pretty easy to read through in one session and refer back to as you go out shooting.
