Split Neutral Density Filters

Asked by Steve Ryan — 16 Mar 2011 Answered

How do you meter with the filter. At a sunset shooting towards the sun do you meter off the foreground that is clear or the filtered darkened sky. Manual, program, av?I've really had mixed results and wonder of the hassle factor of even using it. I'm shooting with a Canon 7D

If your using a graduated ND filter to darken the sky, you'd probably want to take a reading without the filter. If you metered for the dark area of the grad filter the sky would be properly exposed and the foreground would be overexposed. In short, meter off the foreground and forget about the filter.
    Hope this helps.

If you meter off the dark area of the filter, your camera (its TTL system) will compensate for the exposure automatically and whatever effect you desire will be neutralized. So, meter off the clear area.
