Personally I would try taking the Camera to a good Camera repair shop. Your local shop should know a shop they use or refer to. It might be something as simple as build up on your contacts, camera or lens, and a cleaner that the repair shop uses might fix the problem. I thought I was going to have to replace a mirror on my n-90 but the shop I was refered to fixed the problem in a few minutes by using some cleaner and a air compressor. None of my cleaners/brushes would get the marks off my mirror so thought I damaged it.
I also just had my conmtacts cleaned (and I clean my camera often do to the places I shoot at) and my lenses read much better now. and only cost me $20.00. They sometimes use chemicals better than what most of us use or can get.
