What Makes a Great Portrait?

Our next issue, JPG Issue 14, will feature six portraiture studies from six different JPG photographers. But what makes a great portrait?

Photo bloggers Miguel Garcia-Guzman (of Exposure Compensation) and Jörg Colberg (of Concientious) posted a joint, collaborative blog post today discussing what elements make a great portrait.

They interviewed a variety of curators, photographers, editors, and photo bloggers to get their opinions on great portrait photography and posted them alongside examples of their favorite portraits. Check out their blog post for some diverse perspectives on portrait photography. Also, here are a couple of JPG portraits I've been loving lately:
