The JPG Blog

New York Photo Festival

Posted by Laura Brunow Miner on 21 May 2008.

Hi JPG!

Last week I was at the New York Photo Festival in Brooklyn for some inspiring presentations, exhibitions, and parties related to photography. I'll blog separately about some of the JPG members who were involved, but I wanted to do an overview of the four main exhibitions. Each exhibition was strongly thematic and I couldn't help wondering what each curator might have picked from JPG...

Martin Parr - New Typologies
"Magnum Photographer Martin Parr’s exhibit, New Typologies, highlights the use of the photographic series as an attempt to bring order to the chaos around us."

Martin's photo series collection, including a series of dated Soviet sculptures, reminded me of one of my favorite typologies on the JPG site: Sharon Jones' haunting series of swimming pool images.

Kathy Ryan - Chisel
Kathy Ryan, photo editor of the New York Times, chose photos with references to sculpture, painting, and drawing, like this one of a shredded tire.

I immediately thought of Craig Leontowicz' gorgeously composed combinations of painting and photography.

Lesley A. Martin - The Ubiquitous Image
"Lesley A. Martin, book publisher at the Aperture Foundation, reflects on the replication and reproduction of the photographic image in The Ubiquitous Image, focusing on how contemporary artists are using the seemingly limitless cache of disseminated images to create their own work."

Lesley's exhibit had the strongest tie and relation to the JPG concept in general. Since we don't allow diptychs or multiple image uploads on the site, it's a little harder to make a direct connection to one JPG member. Grant Hamilton's work, however, of geometry in the street and on vehicles, seems like something that Lesley would enjoy.

Tim Barber - Various Photographs
Tim has become an influential voice in photo editing due to his unique choices of photos outside the usual pop culture or fine art selections. His taste is difficult to define or to predict, but repeated themes are photos with animals/nature, snapshots, or photos of subcultures.

While Tim's taste is hard to anticipate, I think he'd enjoy the work of JPG member The Afflicted Yard, a photographer whose bizarre photographs of Jamaican subcultures have garnered international attention.
