Photo Challenge: Markets
Posted by Kit Richert — 18 May 2009
I am amazed by this photo challenge! Only 12 hours after the Markets theme was posted on JPG, we had already received several pages of print-quality photographs. Now it has been 3 days and they just keep coming!
The markets theme was chosen by me, but inspired by JPG's Seth Familian, who has two gorgeous shots of produce for sale in Pisac, Peru. The picture that inspired me (right) was of onions bundled by knotted sheets of fabric. The red and white shine of the onion bulbs, exposed roots and bright green stalks are held together in the frame by the colorful cradle of worn fabric. The image is natural, colorful, and beautiful.
The photo made me realize that markets are a photographer's playground. There are endless combinations of items on display, and people interacting with money, items, and one another in interesting ways. Markets and supermarkets differ across the world, come in all sizes, and can even appear outdoors.
Take some time to hit the market this week! Show JPG the people, places, moments, or items that catch your eye. This challenge will close on June 4th.
Check out the stunning submissions we have already received!
