A Million Little Pictures Photo Project

Here at JPG, we just love hearing about great collaborative photo events! A Million Little Pictures is an open photo project and interactive exhibition.

You sign up and send in $16 by October 10th and they'll mail you a disposable camera. Then you snap photos based on the theme of "Adventure" and return the camera in a pre-paid mailing envelope.

Finally, they're going to develop all the rolls and put together an exhibition of the final photographs. Where will the show be held? They haven't decided yet! Whichever city has the most participants gets the exhibition.

There's already over 160 cameras going out all across the US and it sounds like a ton of fun.

Featured JPG Member: Yi-Chuan Lu

We're always on the look-out for JPG members with distinct and interesting styles, and we're so thrilled to find Yi-Chuan Lu. Her distorted Holga shots make you feel like you're in a full-color dream and we're loving the water influence in her work. In fact, we can't seem to find a photograph of hers we don't love.

We decided to find out a bit more about Yi-Chuan Lu and her inspiration:

Name: Yi-Chuan Lu

I love to shoot: Everything when I first see it. The first impression is more real.

My day job: Working, working, and working in Advertising Production.

My favorite camera: Holga. I bought it two years ago. I like the atmosphere taken by Holga, like walking into an imaginary dream.

I've found unexpected inspiration: Discussing things with friends and reading magazines. Everything in life is my inspiration. Even if it's a small thing.

My dream photo location: Rain forests and the Iguazu Falls. I like hot weather and places full of water and animals.

My deepest fear: Snakes. They are really disgusting.

I listen to: Gypsy music and Goran Bregovic. I love tango music too.

The last thing I shot: An acrobatics show from France, called 'Compagnie Transe Express'. It is an amazing show. They stood on cable wire and beat drums. It is dangerous and wonderful.

I love jpg because: The shots in JPG are simple and powerful. Less is more.

I can't wait to: Have a long vacation and take a tour. Take pictures everyday.

New Ways to Celebrate the JPG Community!

With thousands of photos submitted to each issue, it's incredibly difficult to pick just sixty or so for the issue. Excruciating!

We've been searching for ways to encourage people whose work we really admire who don't make it into the issue. You may have noticed that we've ramped up our blog posts to provide promotion to different photographers.

We'd also like to present Theme Outtakes. For each issue theme we will have a downloadable pdf of all the photos we would have liked to have squeezed in, with each page of the outtakes pdf linking to the featured image's JPG photo page. You can find the theme outtakes on our downloads page.

In addition to that, we're thrilled to announce that we'll be having an exhibition of twelve select photos from the fashion theme! We will be partnering with Gen Art, a national arts organization, and exhibiting at Space Gallery here in San Francisco. Each of the photographs will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Gen Art Foundation, which supports emerging artists. This event will take place on October 17th, from 8pm to late, and if you're in the area we'd love to see you there! (We just hope all 96,000 of you don't show up at once!)

The Leica M-Series

The New Yorker recently ran a really interesting article on the history of the Leica, specifically their famous M-series. The beautiful (and very pricey) Leica has an impressive list of devotees and still claims quite the following.

I have never abandoned the Leica, anything different that I have tried has always brought me back to it. I am not saying this is the case for others. But as far as I am concerned it is the camera. It literally constitutes the optical extension of my eye. --Cartier-Bresson

There are also a few Leica aficionados right here in the JPG community.

JPGer Gaëtan Rossier has some great shots taken with a Leica M7.

And Trevor Brady's recent photo essay, Lost Chairs, was taken with a Leica M6.

Everywhere Magazine Announced at TechCrunch40

JPG's publisher, 8020 Publishing, was at TechCrunch40 last week to announce the launch of Everywhere Magazine, a community-powered travel magazine that will showcase the experiences and stories of travelers from around the globe. TechCrunch40 is a conference where selected startups announce, present, and demo their new products. We were thrilled to be one of 40 companies (out of over 700) invited to participate this year.

We presented Everywhere Magazine during the Community and Collaboration Panel and gave a sneak-peak of the upcoming website. Like JPG, Everywhere is driven by the unique and authentic voice of the online community. We got a ton of great questions about the future of print magazines and were able to point to the JPG community as an example of how a community-powered approach to content can make a great magazine.

Let us know what you think and look out for more news on Everywhere Magazine!

JPG Wins Two Folio Magazine Awards

Last night at the Folio Magazine Awards Show, JPG picked up two awards! The Folio Awards honor the best in editorial content and magazine design--sort of a Grammys for magazines.

JPG Magazine was selected as the Gold Winner for best magazine in the Consumer: Enthusiast Art Hobbies Crafts Etc. category. Jpgmag.com was honored as the Bronze Award Winner in the Best Online Community category.

This year a panel of 100 judges considered 3,000 entries from around the globe. There were some great magazines up for awards so we are really thrilled and honored to be selected.

Thanks to all the JPGers out there that make this magazine and community so fantastic!

Snap-Shot-City's worldwide photo hunt!

We just heard about a really neat event and thought we'd pass it on... Snap-Shot-City is a worldwide photographic treasure hunt that aims to open people's eyes to the everyday.

On September 29, teams all around the world will hit the streets and photograph the cities they live in. Each team receives 20 categories that they can creatively interpret by snapping photographs of their city. Afterwards everyone piles back to a local venue to share their adventures and photos.

Apparently, over 500 people played last year and there are already venues in Melbourne, Brisbane, Amsterdam, and Christchurch-- with London, New York, Beijing, Toronto and many more to come. Looks like a really fun way to engage your city and cities across the globe.

It's free to play and you still have a week to grab some friends and register!

Issue 12 is here! Check it out!

We can't be more excited to announce that the wait is over! Issue 12 is hitting the newsstands and flying towards mailboxes. Curated by Project Runway's Alison Kelly, Issue 12 has photographs from three themes (Fashion, Family, and Creative License) and a ton of great stories, tips, and photo essays.

You don't have to wait to take a look, though. As always, you can flip through the magazine right here on the site, and there's also a PDF version of the entire issue (it's a 5.6mb download).

A free download of the whole magazine? Yep! Because you helped to make it, we want you to be able to see it all. Plus we know that as beautiful as the magazine is on your monitor, you really can't beat it in print. I know I've spent all week jealousy guarding my copy from some sticky-fingered roommates.

So check it out, and if you like what you see find JPG Magazine in a store near you in the U.S. or subscribe and have it sent right to your door wherever you are.

Featured JPG Member: Tara Gorman

With so many amazing photographers on JPG right now, we thought it would be nice to make a few introductions. Here on the blog we'll be featuring some of the talented JPG contributors.

And what better place to start than with the wonderful Tara Gorman? Tara, a photographer living in western Massachusetts, is constantly amazing us with her fantastic, dream-like images. You might have seen her photo essay, Small Wonders, in Issue 11: America. We thought we'd find out a bit more about Tara and her work.

Name: Tara Gorman

I love to shoot: Small things, edible things, things with knobs and switches, dioramas, jukeboxes, small-town storefronts and sometimes, even people.

My day job: Right now, I'm lucky enough to not have one.

My favorite camera: My Nikon D200. Okay, so it's my only camera, but that doesn't detract from my fondness. I do, however have a steadily growing list of cameras I'd like to get to know better.

I've found unexpected inspiration: In my View-Master. I started out taking pictures of the reels, then took it apart so that I could shoot my own set-ups through the eyepiece. It really makes the colors pop and I love the vignetting.

My dream photo location: The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, in Sarasota.

My deepest fear: Killer bees. Seriously. Did you see that thing on PBS where they just ganged up on that woman and her kids? They're unstoppable.

I listen to: Well, if it's Saturday at noon, I'm listening to "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me" on NPR. Otherwise, a lot of Yo La Tengo and Stereolab. And Pavement. Stephen Malkmus, if you're reading this, please get back together for one last tour so that I can finally see you live. Thanks.

The last thing I shot: A hot dog vendor in front of the post office. He's nice, but the hot dogs are mushy and weird.

I love jpg because: It reminds me how much I don't know. I love seeing shots I'd never dream of taking, and reading about funky techniques and workarounds. There's always something that makes me say "Wow" and "Damn, how'd they do that?"

I can't wait to: Go to the beach! As I type this, I'm three days away from vacation. Get ready, Rhode Island.

Be sure to check out all of Tara's photographs and let us know if there's someone you'd like to see featured!

Peek into Issue 12!

We're very excited about Issue 12, our Fashion issue. You can download a sneak peak of Issue 12 (1.5MB PDF) and the full version should be on newsstands and up on the site in a few weeks. Stay posted, we've got some exciting extras in the works for this issue!

We're also thrilled to announce that we have our first guest editor, Alison Kelly. Alison is well-known for her involvement in Project Runway, a TV series which shares a spirit of meritocracy with JPG. Her DIY sensibilities and avant-garde style made her a natural choice for editor of this theme, and through her understanding of how fashion can affect people, the final selections have acquired an additional depth.

Check out the sneak peek today, and stay posted for the full issue!
