The start of football season seems the perfect excuse to check out the Catherine Opie show at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (aka LACMA). The documentary photographer’s show, titled “Catherine Opie: Figure and Landscape”, focuses on high school football teams. There are a few surfers thrown in for good measure, too.
The LA Times, in their review, explains: “Her series of photos examines the gender identity of adolescent boys and masculinity as they transition to manhood. ‘It’s another chapter in her ongoing exploration of how gender constitutes identity and being part of a group within society can create or limit opportunities for shaping one’s life,’ said Britt Salvesen, curator and department head of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department at LACMA.”
The show runs through October 17th and generally seems a little less heavy-handed than that curator’s quote. For a bit of fun with the theme, the Crenshaw High School marching band performs at LACMA's amphitheater on September 21st.
