I'm a casual photographer now (still using a Power Shot S5 IS! Maybe some day I'll have the $$$ to splurge on a fancy SLR) but I'm passionate about it and am going to study it when I enter university next fall, where for the first year studies will be entirely in film. I hope to live, work, play, and experience life internationally someday. However, I can't say whether I'll be a professional or casual photographer in that uncertain future.
