Ansel Adams started this whole thing off by using a red filter and mastering the darkroom. Art is in the eye of the beholder. Ansel wanted emotional emphasis. I can now take a picture and apply van gogh filters in photoshop plug-ins. Knowing what conditions work we allow me to "previsualize" what Ansel said he did. It will teach a photographer to recognize color flow and balance faster than the feedback on the back of a digital camera. I would call that refinement in art, not Fantasy. So the choice is not between reality and fantasy, but joy in understanding the beauty in what one sees behind reality.
