Both the realistic looking sanshin to the left and the kankan sanshin to the right are less expensive versions of the popular instrument. the ones on the left with artificial snakeskin covers are about $2-300 US. while the kankan on the right go for about $50.
In the It's called a "Sanshin" not a samisen photo essay.
