The name "Thun" is ancient. This part of Switzerland was occupied by Celtic tribes, in whose language the word "dunum" meant "a fortified place." In 58 B.C. the Romans under Julius Caesar defeated the Celts at Bibracte (France), and most of Switzerland came under Roman rule.
