Captured on March 23, 2004 at Painted Desert National Park, Arizona, USA.

One of the few shots I got that day. Taken during one of the few breaks in a torrential rain storm. These types of storms are a rarity in northern Arizona where there are only a few inches of rainfall each year.

Normally the reds, yellows, oranges, greys and whites of the soft sandstone and sediment layers are brilliantly lit from a harsh desert sun. On that day with the heavily overcast skies and drenched surface, the colors are quite subdued.

Not ,many people get to see this fantastic place like this. According to a Park Ranger, we were one of only 11 cars to enter the park that day.

One of my favorite shots from this vacation.

Shot hand held with one of the original Canon Digital Rebels and the 18-55mm kit lens it came out with. ISO 100, 1/800 sec @ 4.5f. A gradient was applied to darken the sky a bit to bring out the detail of the clouds. Unretouched, other than that.
