Houses in Bermuda are built quite differently from the US. Our walls are made of 10 - 12" thick cement block topped with a limestone slate roof which is white-washed with a lime based paint. No wooden houses here due to hurricanes whipping by us occasionally. The roofs have gutters that collect rainwater which is funnelled to tanks below the houses. We typically don't have attics or basements, so storage space is minimum. Our houses are painted in various pastel shades and will be identified by name - ours is Northgate. This was taken a few years ago when my garden looked a bit tamer than it is now!

Love the color...Tame gardens? What's the point in that?

Nice shot... love the color, style, vegetation AND that neat space above the garage! [Older folks tend to have collected a bit over the years and place a premium on storage!]

Great shot with some interesting information about the house. The rain water that is stored i assume is reused for watering and such?

Thanks for the comments. Michael, the rainwater that is caught on our roofs is used for drinking plus all other uses. Some folks are lucky enough to have a well or piped water, but that is usually only used for flushing as it is brackish. We are very frugal with our water and don't waste it as we have to buy it by the truckload when supplies are low.

I like it, Tricia. I'd be interested in seeing that "less tame" garden". Other than the construction you described, it reminds me of many places here in Southern California. Nice shot. R

The school I teach at in the States has an unusually high population of kids from Bermuda. I enjoy learning about the place from them and they like telling me stories! (like how you used to have a McDonalds... but not anymore- apparently this was a loss for them?) hehe. It sounds like a lovely place to live.

sorry, I missed this one. The elevation of your house ares similar to our one story houses here in CA, The only difference is the construction and the materials we used. Since California is prone to earthquake, we use wood framing or metal studs because thery are lighter materials and then wrapped the exterior with cement plaster. I love the idea of funneling the rain water from the gutter to the storage tank. Great house, My vote!.
