All Hail the King
Two college students selected from amongst their peers portray the King and Queen during the 10 day festival. Here they come out of the Seiden to greet the crowds and the representatives of the Emperor of China. Though Okinawa is officially Japanese, the ties to China are quite strong and go back much further than the ties to Japan. Each year they celebrate this unique relationship in the Ryukyu Kingdom Festival at the ancient fortress and home of the monarchs, Shuri Castle.
