This is my niece, Serena. When she was just three years old, she was shot in the stomach during a robbery at a local store. After the incident, she was very shy and scared to be in public. I wanted a photo that captured her sweet and happy spirit, but she didn't want to smile or pose for pictures. I started playing peekaboo with her and got this photo just as she uncovered her face.
To me, it is the face of strength, full of hope and possiblity.
