J. S Cain was one of the more prominent people that lived in Bodie. He arrived in Bodie when he was 25 and entered the lumber business. He also owned the Midnight Mine next to the Standard Mine and in 1915, it was proven that that the management of the Standard had deliberately and fraudulently tapped the Midnight property. The damages were so great that Cain took over the Standard property (which yielded almost $15mil in 25 years) and ended up as the town's principal property owner.
