sheep wall
Prior to 1850 this area of New Hampshire was practically denuded of trees and was the home of large sheep farms. The sheep pastures occupied every hillside and were enclosed with a myriad of stonewalls to keep each farm's sheep separated from neighboring farms and from the crops planted in the valleys between hills. Now, just the walls remain.
