Snowflake Detail
This is one of a series of snowflakes I photographed during a recent snowstorm. I had to keep the temperature of my equipment below freezing. The outside air temperature was about 27 degrees Fahrenheit. It was back illuminated using a microscope light source. The snowflake was suspended on a chilled glass slide and photographed using photomicroscopy optics on my digital SLR.
This snowflake is actually 3-dimensional. One level of the crystal is in focus in the foreground and the second level is in the background slightly out of focus. The two levels are connected by a hexagonal ice prism in the middle.
In the story Photographing Snowflakes.
