This is one of a series of snowflakes I photographed during a recent snowstorm. I had to keep the temperature of my equipment below freezing. The outside air temperature was about 27 degrees Fahrenheit. It was back illuminated using a microscope light source. The snowflake was suspended on a chilled glass slide and photographed using photomicroscopy optics on my digital SLR.
This snowflake is a flat hexagonal snowflake. The crystal on the right side of the flake formed in an unsymmetric manner.
In the story Photographing Snowflakes.
