  Sorry, I haven't checked in here in a while. Thanks for the comments all!
  For them as care, it was an on-purpose setup, the same as for my other bubble pix. Bottom light source, sometimes a colored gel, glass jar half full of bubble solution. Blow bubbles with a straw, drip food coloring onto bubbles, and shoot. Repeat the process a few times and the soapy water gets murky and looks disgusting when the bottom light is on. So for this one the light was off and the food coloring was yellow. The "flames" are what bubbles do to light when they thin just before popping: the soap film becomes a twisting, swirling fluid prism.
