Our Lady Of China
The Our Lady of China mosaic is a replica of a painting by John Lu Hung-Nien and the subject of a holy card by which Thomas Cardinal Tien, S.V.D. promoted devotion to the Blessed Mother in China. Cardinal Tien, a Divine Word Missionary, became the nation's first Prince of the Church, and the devotion he established to Our Lady of China has flourished.
Chinese Americans in the Archdiocese of Washington pioneered the project and solicited support from among the 100,000 Chinese Catholics across the nation as a means of giving appreciation and tribute to Mary for her maternal intercession for the people of China.
The mosaic pictures Mary holding the Christ Child in Chinese traditional garments and was dedicated August 3, 2002.Text Shrine Documents
