Manhattan, NY (Leaves)
"Excuse me, may I take your photo?"
"Who are you, who do you work for, some kind of magazine?"
"I'm Gary Cohen, and work independently as a documentary photographer."
"Oh, I see. My name is L. Nice to meet you, Gary, sure, if you'd like. I haven't had a photo taken of me in more than ten years, I just found some in an old box."
It's our first day of mild weather since the beginning of spring. Buds are beginning to bloom, and the air smells of empañadas and diesel.
"I just moved to this neighborhood a couple of years ago. It was my dream to live here, my husband's too. We're both laid off from work, but we're lucky and happy to have our apartment."
I show L the photos on my camera, to which I get a gentle smile.
"May I take one more photograph?"
"No, two is enough."
In the Contact Lens photo essay.

Oh, it's perfect how the leaf on the hat is aligned with the center of the face, and the eyes go off to her left.

I like the story. I like the frankness of the portrait. It has an off-kilter, Diane Arbus feel about it.

Great portrait. I love when people look off to the side...brings something to the image...
