The morning that horrible earthquake hit about 120 miles from where Fred (my husband) I live in Tuscany, we got word Siegie (Fred's sister) lost her over four year battle with cancer. But I see she won in that she died smiling and now is free. I took this shot of Siegie, her son (Chris) and her brother (Fred) at Big Trees, the family name for the historical house near Kitchner, Ontario, where Siegie and Fred's grandfather, grandmother, mother, aunt, and uncle had once lived and were the happiest. It is there Carl Ahrens, their grandfather and once famous Canadian artist, produced some of his finest work. Years earlier, Fred, Kim, and I had found comfort in having been there when Siegie and Fred's mom died. Now we're experiencing that same feeling having been there with Siegie.
In the My Hero photo essay.
