In the tradition of the Plains Indians, here in Kansas, the ranchers and farmers fire the prairie anually to burn away the old grass to let the new grass flourish. Amazingly, the hawks have figured out that if they fly over the burning grass, they can get an easy meal of rodents and rabbits fleeing the fire.
