Counting Dust Devils: Early Season

They grow when fields are cleared in the heat, in turnrows where men stand searching the skies for rain

They are stamped into being by the suck of air left when bare feet leave the earth rising tiny at the heels of children

Children chase the big ones
wisps of swirling dust then grow into men who look skyward

They want to see if they can be lifted high from the fields, to see if there is strength enough to rise from that solid earth where they were planted and raised
