From where I stood in Piazza Garibaldi, the heart of Tuscan Massa Marittima, I watched a little Italian girl and boy race up the steps of that town’s 13th century duomo. The girl reached the top first and began a victory song and dance number. The boy turned away from her, rushed down the stairs, and stopped near the bottom step. There he faced the piazza and spoke like a politician caught up in his own words; the girl above continued her solo act.
