I was riding in a jeep across a snow-covered frozen body of water known as Black Lake in a remote corner of Western Mongolia. I had been told the ice was ten feet thick, and it provided the smoothest road available for driving in the rough winters here. I stopped to photograph a mountain in the distance, and crunched my away across the snow to get the best angle. A sudden series of windgusts forced me to avert my eyes to the surface below, and I watched, amazed and mystified, as the piercing wind blew away the snow before me, revealing a network of cracks and mysterious airbubbles trapped in the ice beneath me. The sun made a surprise appearance too, illuminating the rich, deep blue of the lake. The wind stopped. All was now calm, except for me, as I exclaimed over and over again,"Whoa!...Whoa!...Whoooaaa!"
