Digging through old shots wondering what I needed to salvage and what needed to be discarded, I came across this shot.

This man was a stranger to me, but I've seen him often sitting in the corner of our local book store reading his numerous books or newspapers. Whether I'd go once a week or once a month, in the morning or in the evening, he'd be there. In fact, I found myself looking for him. I'd look for him as soon as I'd enter the store and found much joy finding him in his usual seat reading away. He kept to himself, didn't drink coffee, neither did he look up no matter how rowdy his neighbouring table was.

I'd try sitting close to his table so I could in my own way provide him with a "quiet" environment. I didn't know who he was, but I understood the need to find comfort in solitude.

After couple of hours of sitting parallel to him, I tentatively looked up at him and said hi. To which he replied in kind and we both returned to our reading, content in our mutual need for quietness.

One day he asked me what I was reading after noting 15 or so books on photography on my table, to which I enthusiastically replied. His questions lead to an hour of a very enjoyable conversation. I asked him, if I could take his photo (hoping to capture the twinkle in his eye on film) to which he shyly replied yes.

It's been almost 2 years and I still see him in the book store reading away.

This man's name is Jim.
