In Fort Myers, FL, we have a slough (pronounced "slew"). I've lived here my entire life and never thought to visit it. Finally, after living in the area for 30 years I decided to pay a visit. Man, I wish I would have visited sooner. Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve is a natural gem hidden among the residential development that makes up this part of Fort Myers. Stepping into the preserve is like stepping back in time.
I chose this picture because it evokes the sense of mystery and caution with which I approached every turn of the path. The way the trees leaned in gave me the feeling that they were prepared to reach out and grab anyone daring enough to pass near them.
At the end of this boardwalk lies Otter Pond, a tranquil spot perfect for relaxing a few minutes and enjoying the sounds of nature. Although I'm upset that I've missed this experience most of my life, I'm more than happy to have finally discovered it.
