I took this on the sidewalk in front of my house. I was throwing a birthday party for my mother and she happens to be friends with the chief at the fire station down the street. He dropped by with the hose truck and a couple of firemen to sing "Happy Birthday" to her. My neighbor's kids loved getting to see the truck and climb on it. They also love to have their picture taken. This shot was taken right as the truck was driving away and sounding its siren, thus the look of surprise on the little girls face. To me, it captures the wild and diverse jumble of the urban south, the pleasures of childhood, the lush colors of spring and the porch culture that exists in many old neighborhoods.
