Our new friends from Aurora, NY (Amos Acree and Susan Perry-who were in the middle of a two week stay gutting out homes in the New Orleans area) wanted us to see some of the damage. We headed across the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway onto Interstate 10, taking the Vieux Carré exit that brought us into the French Quarter. There were signs everywhere that the city was going to celebrate Mardi Gras.

On the way out of the city we took Interstate 10 through New Orleans East passing mile after mile of gutted homes. Then we headed eastbound toward Slidell on I-10.

Temporary metal panels on westbound I-10 bridge spanning Lake Pontchartrain taken with a Wal-Mart throw away camera on 12 February 2006. 38 spans of the eastbound bridge and 20 spans of the westbound bridge were dislodged and fell either completely or partially into the lake.

Thanks for coming. People here appreciated you even if we never met you. It was a rough time for us oldtimers who lost everything.
