An older man pauses in the gateway to Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo.

Yasukuni Shrine is dedicated to those who died fighting for the Emperor. Over two million kami (spirits) are enshrined there.

The shrine is controversial because of the enshrinement of about a thousand people convicted of war crimes in the aftermath of World War II.
