World's Fair - Paris 1900
This has been in our family for a long time. It's now past down to my son.
I remember this as a kid but didn't think to ask about its history. Now my mom is gone and my father has no memory so I guess we'll never know.
The insignia on the top says "Exposition Universelle Internationale. Paris 1900.
It looks like one of the original 3D view masters and has a number of picture cards from various places. The card shown here is of someplace in portugal.
Each card has 2 identical pictures. When you look through the lenses it is 3D, though I'm not sure how.

We had one when we were little. It belonged to my adopted father's parents and they were very old. It had a bunch of pictures to go with it. Very cool.

Priceless! It's a Stereoscope, popular in the late 1800's. A stereoscope is composed of two pictures mounted next to each other, and a set of lenses to view the pictures through. Each picture is taken from a slightly different viewpoint that corresponds closely to the spacing of the eyes. The left picture represents what the left eye would see, and likewise for the right picture. When observing the pictures through a special viewer, the pair of two-dimensional pictures merge together into a single three-dimensional photograph

Those things are so awesome. If I had a disposable income I'd buy one and start a collection.

You can make your own cards very easily by the first pic then shit to the right about 1/30th the distance to your nearest object and take the second photo then use a program called StereoPhoto Maker to load and align the images and print them as cards the software is FREE

I have been shooting stereo photos for about 6 years now and have a twin camera rig that will capture action shots. It's a great way to capture a moment in time
