The Victorian obsession with the gothic is most obvious here in Highgate. The circle of lebanon is built around the roots of a cedar tree, which was part of an old estate taken over to build the cemetery in 1839. The circle of mausoleums enclose the roots of the great tree, and have helped to preserve it to this day.
