The legal status of midwifery in Kansas is a gray area. Technically, babies are supposed to be born in hospitals, under a licensed doctor's watch. But the laws are written to allow for those all too-common births when no doctor is present: enroute to the hospital, in grocery store isles or on the living room floor. This is a photgraph from a college photojournalism project, done for a local newspaper during an internship. The editors decided not to publish tthe story.
