Point well taken. Perhaps the most iconic photo from the Great Depression and your b&w treatment underscore the message. Nicely done.

Dorothea Lange is dead, isn't she. Interesting to see this so shortly after my depression style upload the other day.
And yes, just because you can change something, doesn't mean you should. Captivating image, perfect of course in mono - or maybe one might think you'd done some color popping!!! -

The original was 'photoshopped' to remove a thumb form the right of the print.
-
Charles Rushton said (3 Sep 2009):
Actually, that is my unretouched thumb. It is catching the light from the window and so appears abnormally bright.
-
Tony said (3 Sep 2009):
Sorry Charles, for not being clear, when the print was published they removed the Mother's thumb from the right side of the image which was awkwardly in shot below the arm of the child.

John Linton gave props (6 Sep 2009):
Dorothea Lange is rolling over in her grave...with laughter.

Max Schenk said (8 Sep 2009):
Ahh...the merry years of the Dust Bowl. It's too bad the photo taken just after that one was the one that became famous....
