With one hand raised, this pianist presented a picture of quiet meditation.

This was the image that inspired this photo essay, The Sounds of Silence.

I had positioned myself right in front of the pianist to photograph his portrait when, suddenly, his hand appeared. I took one quick shot and waited for more opportunities when the same action would be repeated, but the first shot turned out best.

From having taken thousands of images of musicians in maybe over a hundred performances, I have come to realise that they often photograph better when they are NOT performing.
