We took our first cross country trip (family of 5) in August '56 (Virginia to California, no a/c, both parents smoking, two-lane highways) and I remember these motels very well. Dad would go inside, negotiate a price (usually $5), and we would "shoehorn" our way into the tiny room. The television was metered: 25 cents would usually buy 30 minutes, sometimes more. The good old days, for sure . . .

Peggy, of course I DO remember the vibrating beds (15 minutes for a quarter), always an "inside" joke (evidently) with mom and dad (they smirked a lot), but since I am the ONLY Republican at JPG, I felt it my duty to say NOTHING!!!!! To Mom and Dad's credit, they allowed me to light their cigarettes when I turned 10.
