With nightfall, the candles that line the Cemetery’s pathways are the only source of illumination. It’s spooky, and the youngsters love it.
The doors to the Acklen Mausoleum open only once a year. And when they do, the ghostly apparitions of Adelicia and Joseph appear. The shrieking can be heard all the way to Memphis!
I took 28 shots of the Mount Olivet Cemetery Tour but, rather than uploading more of them, I hope that the five I have uploaded (including a diptych) will do justice to the Tour.
The Tour’s net revenue is re-invested in the Cemetery. The Tour provides funding to maintain many of the Cemetery’s ancient and ornate graves, sculptures, and mausoleums. The Tour has also funded capital improvements, including a Civil War art museum. We have raised over $100,000 for historical preservation.
I have volunteered since the begining, and I look forward to the Tour every year. Please visit us next year on the second Saturday in October.
