Grand Mosaic
Submitted to Photo Challenge: Orange
Bacteria in the microbial mat surrounding Yellowstone's fantastic Grand Prismatic Spring, "appear orange, red, or yellow" during the summertime. "However during the winter, the mats are usually dark green, because sunlight is more scarce and the microbes produce more chlorophyll to compensate, thereby masking the carotenoid colors."
