Matthew Fontaine Maury is possibly the most decorated American in history, but he is largely uknown today. In his day, he was known as the "Pathfinder of the Seas," and he was credited with mapping the ocean after a lifetime devoted to the study of navigation, including currents, winds, ships' logs, and migratory patterns of whales. He was instrumental in founding the U. S. Naval Academy. I first learned of Maury when I was a cadet at VMI, where he had served on the faculty. Since then, I have learned that he grew up in Maury County, just south of Nashville. Maury is buried in Richmond's Hollywood Cemetery, between Presidents Monroe and Tyler. Google Maury for a very interesting story. My thanks to Linda for allowing me to present this brief biographical sketch.
