At four o’clock this morning I arrive in Uyuni. I have ascended over 8000 feet, coming from Santa Cruz, and it is noticeable. I am out of breath all the time due to the altitude.
After a short nap I get up to inspect the village and it surroundings. Just outside of Uyuni, I bump into a bizarre scene: a cemetery for trains! Literally hundreds of trains that are out of order are dumped at the end of an old railway track. The terrain around the cemetery is desolate and dry. The sky is bright blue and because of the strong wind I do not notice the burning sun.
The better part of the trains have turned into piles of metal and rust. Some of the them are, although completely stripped, still in a rather good condition.
