The mostly derelict building on the right is a reminder of the once thriving cotton industry of the north of England. The viaduct itself was built in 1840 to carry trains over the River Mersey from Manchester to London. It consists of 27 arches and is one of the largest brick built structures in Europe with over 11 million bricks used in its construction.
