The cornerstone was laid on 16 December 1864 and due to financial probems was not fully completed until 1904.

The catherdral spire reaches to 63 metres above Cathedral Square.

The spire has been damaged 3 times by earthquakes. After the third in 1901, the stone construction was replaced with a more resilient surface of weathered copper sheeting.
