Samba Dancer, Cidade de Deus
Taken at a samba school in City of God, an impoverished Brazillian neighborhood. The dancers were performing for a series of American youth choruses, myself among the group. It was a definite culture clash, us with our chamber music in our starched tour uniforms of polos and khakis, the dancers with their heavy drum beats and glittering costumes. Couldn't help but feel a little jealous. This girl couldn't have been more than 9 or 10 but she danced with more soul than anyone I've ever seen.
