We hadn't slept in two nights, and we moved through the daylight with a fierce anxiety. We knew we were being followed.
At dusk, our minds alternately played with images of what once was, always returning against any will we had to what must be.
At last, when all options had failed, we knew our last night had come. No one spoke as we built the fire high as if it were a shield against an unchangeable fate.
Dawn brought a damp fog, and in silence it strode before us and stood.
It called us each by name.
