We hadn't slept in two nights, and we moved through the daylight with a fierce anxiety. We knew we were being followed.
At dusk, our minds alternately played with images of what once was, and always returning against any will we had to what must be. We accepted the ghosts of the past with grateful serenity.
Oh! to be so ignorant and carefree once again!
But what must be always interfered, and tore these dreams of yesterday's bliss from our exhausted and grasping minds.
We built the fires high and put lanterns all around, and we watched the edge of light for any movement. Our eyes and our nerves tricking us into false panics while small coils of wind moved the occassional leaf, or caused an oak to release its acorn to the ground.
With dawn, in the silence ever eternal between night and day, before the sun's first long rays could be felt in the forest, It came.
And it called us by name.
