Good photo! Sad but most choose to live on the street because they aren't allowed to drink in the homeless shelters. Most have no desire to quit drinking.

So sad!

Oregon Curly (Deleted) gave props (1 Dec 2009):
It is sad, but I agree somewhat with Fred, a great many are there, and stay there, from choices they have made. Is the gent that lives on the grate down by State Dept still there?

Looks like some sort of insect. Probably feels that way to the poor guy.

Andrea Petersen gave props (2 Dec 2009):
That is so sad that a life is this down and out ...The dead leaves on the ground reminds me of this soul on the bench who may have started out in life on the right track but through circumstances beyond his/her control after the wrong choices were made gave up on life and has no desire to start afresh....so he is taking space on the bench withered like the dead leaves around him...

Homelessness is such a widespread problem! The provincial government is planning to close 246 beds in Alberta Hospital here in my city of Edmonton. If these beds close, there will be more psychiatric patients than ever on the streets. Edmonton already has a huge problem with homelessness.

When I lived in Annapolis, I was always amazed at how many homeless people "lived" on and around the Mall. I hope they found shelter from the latest snowstorm. Great capture. voted.

I think this picture is quite poignant. Just from the comments above, homelessness is prevalent in so many cities across the world. It is not just a US problem, but a world problem. Pictures like this bring the problem to the forefront.
Thanks for the picture. -

Voted. This shot makes one think. We should always be kind to the homeless especially since we never know when it might happen to us for all sorts of reasons, be it mental illness, natural disasters, war or economical reasons.
