Well, not really.
If he was surprised by me, you would see his mouth closed, his ears cocked towards me, and you would be able to see his face tense. Most of all, you would see his tail, as they really don't stick around when surprised.
He was well aware of me for longer than I was of him, I'm sure.
There's also another reason he isn't tense here. Just outside of the frame, he's holding a gun. This is the moment he's telling me not to move.
Be careful in the woods, kids. Leave wildlife alone.

Great expressive portrait. Leave the wildlife alone sounds like good advice to me.

Funny stuff! I was held up by two squirrels in the park the other day with shivs. They took my french fries.

Ah yes, the ol' big eared, ring-eyed, laughing young deer. Haven't seen one of those since my last safari in Tanzania back before War Two. Huzza! Good Show with your shot and all that rot! Yours etc. Rodger Disswhanns, Major, British VI Fusileers

Reminds me a little of when I would have to ask the tourists (when I was a Yellowstone Ranger) not to pet the black bears. (Never saw an attempt to pet a grizz.)
