an event that happens every autumn -- el día de la transhumancia, when herds are moved from summer grazing to winter grazing grounds -- to remind the residents of the capital that there are a whole lot of country folk (including shepherds and their charges) out there, living in traditional ways, providing diversity.

I love this shot because it reminds me of where I live.....we have a 'trailing of the sheep' festival every fall, and you get to be a sheephearder for a day. Voted.

this is a genine event, a massive procession that passes right through the heart of madrid, starting with a long parade of people from towns north and west of the capital in traditional dress, often making traditional music, ending with 1000 sheep controlled by a handful of shepherds (and finally a crew of city workers doing the thankless job of cleaning up after horses and sheep). the look on the faces of city folk as the street turns into a river of animals is wonderful and priceless.
